U.S. puts up valiant effort against Malaysia

The Match:
Team USA seeded 12th was looking for an upset of the 5th ranked Malaysian team. The match started out with Preston Quick playing Mohd Adnan who is ranked #63 in the world. Quick, off to a slow start lost the first game 11-3. He settled in in the second to take a lead 9-5, but was unable to hold off a surging Mohd losing the second game 15-13 after holding a few games balls. The third started off where the second ended with close long rally’s. This game also going to extra points, but Quick was unable to convert another game ball opportunity and lost 12-10 to give Malaysia a 1-0 lead.

The second match pitted Julian Illingworth vs Mohd Aslan. The first game they each were feeling each other out as this was their first time playing each other. Azlan took the first game, but Julian came out strong in the second to level the match at 1 each. Azlan proved to be too tough to Julian in the last two games losing them 11-9 and 11-6 respectively.

With the overall match score 0-2, Gilly Lane was going on with nothing to lose against top ranked Ong Beng Hee. Gilly, started very strong and snuck out the first game 12-10. Beng Hee came out very strong and quickly took the second game and third games 11-4 and 11-7. The fourth was a battle much like the first with long rally’s going both ways. In the end, Beng Hee was too strong for Gilly and won the fourth 11-9.

Malaysia Def USA 3-0

Team USA fought hard against a well experienced Malaysian team, who boasts two players in the Top 20 PSA rankings, but were unable to pull out the victory. Tonight's matches concluded the round of Pool Play and now the US faces a determined South African team who pulled off a major upset today by beating Pakistan 2-1 and earning the top spot in the opposite pool.
